I have noticed that more companies are stating we are “green” we use biodegradable bags..and our competitors don’t. That is great BUT it only works if you are sending the bags to a dump that is “green” and they are rotating these bags along with other biodegradable trash.

Biodegradable products need air to break down. If the bags/plastic is trapped in the middle of a trash heap they will not break down, not even a banana peel would break down. The only other way the biodegradable bags will work is if the company have their own compost pile that they turn regularly to help the bags break down but then there are the dangers of the toxins from the pet waste/trash being in their yard and getting into the neighborhood water system. Not a good thing.

Let’s look at the two main types of biodegradable plastic bags. http://www.natural-environment.com.

Biodegradable Plastic Bags
Typically, biodegradable plastic bags are made from farmed products like cornstarch, which break down into elements like carbon dioxide, water and methane. They don’t just decompose automatically though – they need the right conditions to decompose.

To decompose properly, a biodegradable plastic bag should be composted. It should not be sent to landfill, as it may contribute to methane emissions. To meet international standards, a biodegradable plastic bag should compost within 12 weeks, then fully biodegrade within 6 months.

Degradable Plastic Bags
Degradable plastic bags decompose due to a chemical additive to oxygen, light or heat and are best suited to landfill. Degradable bags are also referred to as “oxo degradable” bags.

Degradable plastic bags will usually break down automatically. This could range between anywhere from 3 months to 18 months after manufacture, or even longer.

In order for the break down of the bags to work the correct procedures must be used. More than likely no one knows what happens to the bag once it is disposed of in a trash dumpster and hauled off to the local city dump.

Did you know?
these facts pulled from PoopBags.com

4 million tons – It is estimated that dog owners do not collect over 4 million tons of dog waste annually.

20-30% of all pollutants in waterways attributed to dog waste – Pollutants originating from rainwater run-off via sewer
systems, and dogs pooping near watersheds or beaches. Overall, it is believed dog waste is third or fourth on the list of
contributors to bacteria in contaminated waters.

4th highest generated waste – Plastics are the fourth highest generated waste in the U.S., originate from petroleum which is
non-renewable, do not biodegrade, and take thousands of years to break down. Paper, yard trimmings, and food scraps are the
top three generated. However, all of them come from renewable resources.

Bottom – Plastics are the least recycled with a 6.9% recovery rate. In 2006, the U.S. produced 29.5 million tons of plastic and
only recycled 2.04 tons.

So before you go with a company that states we are “green” ask them a few questions about how they dispose of the bags and if they are going to a “breathable” dump site…and what type of biodegradable bags they are actually using…

Once again, I head to the grocery store for the big jug of vinegar. I use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol. My vet recommended this after Marty had ear surgery on his ear. How I know Marty is getting an ear infection..he starts to bite his leg then the tell tell sign his brother, Shadow, is glued to the infected ear licking it. Shadow with his well intentions on “mothering” his brother brings more trouble to Marty’s ear. So here we are doing the mixture of white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol. I usually start seeing results after a few days. Marty hates having this stinky mixture put in his ear but I think it is wonderful..and have been using it for many years. I do not want Marty to have to go through ear surgery again.

I found an article written by Dr. Dawn Ruben on this remedy. [contact-form]

Did you know that a dog’s learning ability is measured by his/her accuracy in reading their owner’s facial expressions? I know when we started our agility training that we had to go through steps to get Mimi to where she would get to the point she would just watch my face to get her que at what she needed to do.

Try this test..see how your pup does…

While hanging out in your normal area with your pup, take a toy that your pet is not crazy about and casually place it halfway between you and your pet, but, no more than 6 ft away from you and your pet. Do not look directly at your pet. Call his name to get their attention. Once you have made eye contact with your pet shift your eyes to the toy..then back to your dog and repeat…

A. does your dog look at the object without gettting up

B. walk over and smell it or pick it up

C. stare at you or look confused

D. goes to sleep…

Hopefully your answer is B….

If not keep working on your facial expression ques with your pup…this is an great exercise for your pup to focus on you.
